On Friday, July 13th the garden was visited by Mr. Kevin Concannon, USDA Undersecretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services; David Von Behren, Regional Director of Public Affairs; Darlene Sanchez, Regional Director for Special Nutrition Programs; and the project leadership team from ISU, Linn and Blackhawk Extension and Outreach. The visit provided Mr. Concannon an opportunity to see the gardens in process, observe videos of the student excitement as they experienced their first harvests, to hear other success stories that the project is experiencing, and future plans for expanding the program in our area. He shared changes that the USDA is implementing in the food programs, including encouraging the school systems to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables. It was a very informative session, and it rained the entire time he was there…except for the garden tour.
There were a lot of vegetables waiting to be harvested! With the help of five 2nd grade students we have enough to share with classes involved in the garden project. Edgar wrote, “It was hot outside and we pulled rutabagas.” Mauricio said, “We picked carrots, beans, potatoes, a pepper, tomatoes and cucumber.”
Sarahi wrote in Spanish, “Estaba haciendo calor y estabamos sudando mucho. Saquemos cosas halando y dando vueltas.”
